Delle Big Crow

Delle Big Crow (1955 – 2011) was Oglala Lakota and grew up on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. She became involved in the American Indian Movement at the age of sixteen, having heard AIM leader Russel Means speak about the importance of cultural revival. Later, Big Crow attended the University of South Dakota and received a Bachelor’s in Education in 1989.  Throughout her life, Big Crow advocated for the rejuvenation of Lakota language and culture within education. In her life and activism, Big Crow was always driven by her desire and determination to pass her culture down to future generations, including her own children and grandchildren.

Big Crow was involved in many of the local protest actions organized by the Pine Ridge matriarchs leading up to the Wounded Knee occupation. She was still in school at the time of the occupation and left in order to support the Independent Oglala Nation. Following the occupation, the FBI and Dick Wilson terrorized the Pine Ridge community in what became known as the “Reign of Terror.” During this time, Big Crow’s husband, Byron DeSersa, was murdered, and the life of her unborn baby was jeopardized.
